Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj (1630–1680): Legendary warrior-king from Bhonsle clan who founded the Maratha Empire in western India. Carved an independent kingdom from the declining Adilshahi Sultanate of Bijapur while challenging the mighty Mughal Empire. Formally crowned Chhatrapati in 1674 at Raigad Fort, establishing Hindavi Swarajya or self-rule.
Early Military Foundation: Began at age 16 by capturing Torna Fort in 1645/1646. Quickly seized strategic forts including Kondana, Purandar, and Raigad, laying the groundwork for an independent state against established powers.
Guerrilla Warfare Genius: Mastered Ganimi Kava tactics. Used speed, surprise, and deep knowledge of Sahyadri mountain terrain to outmaneuver and defeat far larger, better-equipped armies of Bijapur and the Mughals. Redefined warfare in the Deccan.
Major Military Feats: Decisively defeated veteran Bijapur general Afzal Khan at Pratapgad in 1659, cementing his power. Executed daring 1663 night raid on Shaista Khan, Aurangzeb’s uncle, in Pune, damaging Mughal prestige. Forced to sign Treaty of Purandar, then house-arrested in Agra by Aurangzeb in 1666, but escaped with son Sambhaji hidden in sweet baskets.
Naval Visionary: Recognized as Father of the Indian Navy. Built a formidable fleet of 160–400 warships to defend Konkan coast against Siddis, Portuguese, and British. Constructed marine forts like Sindhudurg and Vijaydurg.
Progressive Administration: Instituted Ashta Pradhan, an eight-minister council led by the Peshwa, for efficient governance. Replaced exploitative Jagirdari with farmer-friendly Ryotwari revenue system to stop tax harassment.
Social Policy: Championed religious tolerance with Muslims serving in army and navy. Enforced strict zero tolerance for crimes against women, even in enemy territory. Promoted Marathi and Sanskrit in court, replacing Persian, to strengthen cultural identity.
